Aside from my literary alter-ego, I'm just this guy. My El Jay used to be a den of lies, a sort of playground full of stories from an Old Country that never existed, love advice from demons, and other, less plausible things. It was intended to give everyone a bit of a break from the insanity and inanity that tends to find its way onto these journals.
Nowadays, the den of lies is no more, and I'm writing about myself and my past with occasional forays into politics, and most of it's true. Or in any case, "true enough," as David Sedaris once said. This is a strange turn of events for me, but I think I'm handling it well. A lot of it's pretty personal stuff, but I do hope you keep reading anyway. It'll be a fun ride, and maybe we'll even get to know each other.
Oh, for the other stuff: I'm 25, and I graduated a couple of years ago with majors in Psychology and Politics and a minor in Computer Science from Oberlin, a funky college in Ohio that put the 'liberal' in 'pissed off, brick-throwing liberal'. Now, after an interlude at UMD, I study middle eastern politics and political theory in a PhD program at the University of Pennsylvania (the private school in Philadelphia, not the public one in the middle of nowhere), and with any luck, one day I'll be one of those pointy-headed university professors. And if not, err, I can always deconstruct hegemonic and essentialist categories for food. I read in The Economist that the market for transgressing metanarratives is really maturing.
I'm also really bad at talking about myself directly. I hope this is because I'm a complex person, and not because I'm inarticulate. Read on and maybe you'll find out. And I actually do like long walks on the beach. A lot. So there.
